A distinct responsibility of healthcare staff and, in particular, children’s nurses is to provide a safe environment for children and their families while in hospital. Indeed, the nurse’s UKCC (1992) Code of Professional Conduct states, ‘Each registered nurse, midwife and health visitor shall act, at all times, in such a manner as to safeguard and promote the interests of individual patients and clients.’
