NMC fitness to practise: misconduct in private lives should be considered
Independent reviews into how the Nursing and Midwifery Council handled fitness to practise cases flagged by a whistleblower said concerns were raised about an ‘overly restrictive approach to what may constitute misconduct’, especially where the behaviour occurred outside of work. One review found there may have been cases involving racist behaviour by registrants outside work that were wrongly not pursued because they did not involve ‘deep-seated attitudinal issues’. The NMC said its guidance on cases involving registrants’ private lives was previously ‘inadequate’ but had since been improved.
