Evaluating patients’ views of a nurse-led results clinic

A neuro-oncology patient satisfaction survey revealed that the delivery of histology results could be improved. The clinical nurse specialist (CNS) team responded by developing a nurse-led results clinic, delivered by one CNS in a Macmillan information centre away from the main hospital site. An audit conducted in the first six months of operation found that most patients were satisfied with the consultation, thought it was delivered by an appropriate professional and that the location was right. The audit results indicate that CNSs can improve patients’ cancer journeys by personalising services and addressing complex information needs. This is a positive service development and nurse specialists can use the findings as evidence for service redesign to respond to patient need.
