Person-centred care planning for clients with complex needs

This case study describes one aspect of successful person-centred planning by intellectual disability nurses for a 68-year-old man who is preoccupied by ritual and repetition, and who receives specialist care for psoriasis. A planned intervention to maintain skin integrity was built into his daily routine, including the application of ointments, gels and compression stockings while staff constantly communicate to him in simple terms about what is happening. Thus he can make sense of and co-operate with a procedure that enhances his quality of life.
