Child death: mother’s concerns not heeded by hospital staff
Rose Harfleet, 12, died after nursing and medical staff at Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford failed to recognise that she was clinically deteriorating, a coroner has found. Rose had been diagnosed with mosaic trisomy 17 with global developmental delay, a rare chromosomal condition, from birth. Staff did not take Rose’s history from her mother and ‘underestimated the severity’ of her signs and symptoms, the coroner said. The coroner also flagged concerns about a lack of national or local guidance to help hospital staff to ‘appropriately manage patients such as Rose’ and said that in the absence of such guidance the importance of responding to her mother’s concerns was not recognised.
