Damning review of NMC marks ‘dark period’ in regulator’s history

A damning new report by super-regulator the Professional Standards Authority says the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) failed to meet key standards in 2023-24, including in relation to safeguarding and fitness to practise (FtP). Only 11 of 18 standards assessed were met, with long FtP case delays, register integrity issues and education concerns also highlighted. The interim chief of the NMC acknowledged failings and said the PSA report reflects a ‘dark period’ in the regulator's history. The NMC has pledged continued reform and recovery.
