Fears for senior nursing roles amid pressures to cut NHS costs

Cost pressures are prompting some NHS trusts to propose major cuts to senior nursing roles, Nursing Standard has discovered. One nurse, who wishes to remain anonymous, says her trust is consulting on a proposal that would eradicate all of its band 8 head of nursing posts and some matron posts, which it suggests would bring front-line staff closer to leadership. Trust leaders say the restructure aligns with the government’s new 10 Year Health Plan for England, which includes mandated cost reductions and productivity targets for trusts and integrated care boards.
