Rest breaks: nursing staff win dispute with employer

Cardiac theatre nurses at St Thomas’ Hospital in London have won a dispute over being forced to repay compensatory rest hours after on-call shifts. A 2019 rule change by a hospital manager caused exhaustion and demoralisation among nursing staff, but after threatening strike action, management scrapped the rule. The health union Unite confirmed the issue is resolved. Nursing staff have welcomed the change, and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust agreed to adjust conditions across all departments.
