Senior leaders tell nurses: ‘don’t wait to be asked to lead’
Nursing leaders from around the world addressing the International Council of Nurses congress in Helsinki, Finland, this week urged nurses to step forward to lead and not wait to be asked. Speakers, including US National League for Nursing president and former Royal College of Nursing (RCN) general secretary Beverly Malone, and former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clarke, emphasised the importance of mentors, self-belief and finding a personal ‘North Star’. They encouraged nurses to act with purpose and recognise their power to drive change in healthcare.
