Thousands quit nursing early due to poor working conditions

Nurses are leaving the profession up to ten years before they had planned because of pressure and negative experiences, the latest leavers’ survey from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) shows. Of those who left the register earlier than they had planned, 54% left between one and four years earlier than they expected, while 23% left five to ten years earlier. The former registrants gave a mix of workplace pressures and negative personal experiences as the reasons for leaving, with a ‘concerning‘ number citing physical or mental health as the reason, the NMC said.
