SBAR for nursing students: how it can help improve your handovers
The communication tool SBAR, which stands for ‘situation’, ‘background’, ‘assessment’ and ‘recommendation’, is a structured framework that can help nursing students escalate and explain patient concerns clearly and confidently. Widely used in clinical handovers, it can improve students’ communication and critical thinking skills, and ultimately, patient safety. This article explores how students can use SBAR to boost their leadership skills and confidence, and how how to practise it during clinical placements.
