Inappropriate behaviour at work: what to do if someone crosses the line

Nurses are required to ‘stay objective and have clear professional boundaries at all times’ with those who are or have been in their care, as well as with families and carers, according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code. There are numerous ways in which boundaries can be breached, including engaging in romantic or financial relationships and giving or accepting expensive gifts. But some behaviours and circumstances fall into a grey area, including relationships with colleagues. Here are some tips on how nurses can deal with the challenges different relationships and settings in nursing may present and ensure they stay within accepted boundaries.
