Nurses stuck in the NMC system: are temporary suspensions too long?
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is criticised for how it imposes interim sanctions on nurses, pending further review of their fitness to practise. A judge questioned the regulator’s use of interim suspension orders, which temporarily restrict nurses’ practice, and can hang over nurses for many months and blight their careers. A nurse and campaigner for better fitness to practise (FtP) investigations and screening encourages nurses to engage with the NMC if they face conditions of practice or suspension orders, and calls for better management of the processes, as well as support for nurses involved.
