Recruiting for research: when incentives undermine integrity
PhD student Hannah Thompson offers her personal experience of the challenges of recruiting participants for research of psychosocial disability and recovery. She spent over 18 months carefully developing her study design, ethics application and recruitment strategy, and decided to turn to social media. Social media offered a broad reach, but the requirement to advertise a $50 remuneration on the participant information sheet led to significant consequences, raising important questions over ethics, incentives and digital trust in nursing research.
