Revalidation: how can nurses gain their participatory CPD hours?

Nurses must complete 35 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) activity every three years for revalidation with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and 20 of those hours must be participatory. The scope in nursing for participatory CPD – where the registrant interacts with fellow professionals – is broad and includes mentorship, peer reviewing, fact-finding about other relevant services and social media engagement on professional discussions. ‘CPD by the bedside’ can also be classed as participatory learning for the purposes of revalidation; this provides nurses with opportunities to use analysis of and reflection on their everyday practice to build evidence of participatory CPD hours.
