What is the new definition of ‘nurse’ and why do we need one?
The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has produced a new global definition of ‘nurse’ and ‘nursing’, which is vital as the role and functions of nurses have evolved and will continue to evolve with changes in healthcare policy and technological innovations. The new definition is compared with the 1987 version as well as a definition from the 1960s. A timeline shows the history of the term ‘nurse’. The ICN says the new definition elevates the status of nurses, expands the scope of practice of nurses and provides clarity for integrating nursing into healthcare legislation and policy
