Men in nursing most likely to be abused by patients and public

Male nurses and nursing support staff reported more cases of abuse or harassment by patients, families and the public than their female colleagues. But nurses who are women of black or minority ethnic heritage are the staff group most likely to be bullied or harassed by their colleagues, NHS England’s 2024 Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) report reveals. The report, which draws on information from staff records and responses to the annual NHS staff survey, explores prevalence of reports of harassment, bullying and abuse, whether by the public or by NHS colleagues, and examines distribution by sex, race and professional group. Health unions call on NHS organisations to change their cultures and ensure workplaces are safe for all nursing staff.
