Stoma care: a step-by-step guide for nursing students

Stoma care is a key nursing skill required for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). While nursing students are not expected to be experts at the point of registration, they need to develop a solid understanding of stoma types and person-centred care for people with a stoma. Stomas are formed in relation to various medical conditions, such as bowel and bladder cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. They require regular assessment and skin protection. A stoma clinical nurse specialist gives step-by-step guidance on stoma care, and how students can build confidence on clinical placements through observation, hands-on practice and specialist input.
