Nursing staff consider quitting over lack of jobs or bank shifts

A newly registered nurse talks of claiming Universal Credit and undertaking bank shifts because NHS trust recruitment freezes have prevented here from securing a nursing job. She adds that bank shifts are scarce too, and she knows of peers in a similar situation.  She adds:‘I’m thinking about giving up and just looking for something else’  and ‘the NHS risks losing an entire generation of nurses before their careers even begin’. A former nurse, now healthcare assistant, talks of banks shifts being cancelled ‘two hours before my shift starts’, adding ‘it’s got to a point where I don’t know if I’m going to be able to pay my bills’.
