Patient death: tissue viability nurse recommendations not acted on

A coroner said in a prevention of future deaths report that hospital nursing staff failed to understand and act on a tissue viability nurse’s recommendation that a man with a deteriorating pressure ulcer on his heel and leg ischaemia be referred to a podiatrist. Nurses failed to make the referral and did not follow the specialist nurse’s recommendation regarding the appropriate wound dressings to use. The patient, Edward Funnell, died within months, although the coroner stated these failures in nursing care did could not be blamed for his death.
