Motivational interviewing in nursing: how can I use it in practice?
As a nurse, offering advice or solutions to a patient can be unhelpful, potentially making the individual feel judged or patronised. A more positive approach that recognises the individual’s autonomy may be to pick up on cues from them and use the techniques of motivational interviewing to encourage them to make changes that benefit their health themselves. Motivational interviewing is an evidence-based technique and can be applied in health promotion, mental health and management of long-term conditions. It can enhance nursing students’ sense of fulfilment, which they can carry into their careers. Read about the principles of motivational interviewing and mnemonics that help you remember them.
