Nursing student expenses: how to claim what you’re entitled to

Nursing students incur out-of-pocket expenses while on clinical placement. Extra travel and accommodation costs can add to students’ financial pressures, so it’s important to know which expenses can be claimed back, and how the process works. This article explains eligibility criteria for claiming additional expenses of commuting to and from clinical placement, and when it is possible to seek reimbursement if temporary accommodation is needed. A nursing student describes the financial stresses resulting from slow reimbursement and she is critical of some allowances, saying they have fallen behind inflation. Additional sources of financial support for nursing students, including childcare grants, hardship support and disability allowances are outlined.
