Island nursing role is idyllic – but there seems to be a catch

An advertised nursing post on a small, remote island has almost all the makings of a dream job, writes columnist Jane Bates. But while many would argue NHS pay is not generous, she asks how it can be that this autonomous role as the island’s sole healthcare provider is only deemed to be band 6. While the beautiful landscape and close-knit, resilient island community of Fair Isle, between the archipelagos of Shetland and Orkney, are undeniable drawcards, there are also the challenges of wild weather, distance from family and friends, and being constantly on call, she says – and band 6 does not match the level of responsibility it must entail.
